The Portuguese passport will include a page in Braille, becoming the first in the European Union to implement the innovative measure, which will allow visually impaired citizens to identify their name, number and expiration date of the document.
This new function on the Portuguese passport was presented during a ceremony to mark the Portuguese borders and immigration service SEF’s 42nd anniversary.
During the ceremony, a diplomatic passport was presented to the Secretary of State for the Inclusion of Disabled People, Ana Sofia Antunes, who is visually impaired, and to the President of ACAPO, José Augusto Tomé Coelho, as well as to the secretary of the institution, Fernando Manuel Costa dos Santos.
Even though several countries are in the process to implement a similar project, Portugal was the first European country to have the passport with braille in full operation.
