Engineering Students Design Haptic Feedback Vest to Direct Blind and Partially Sighted People

Students from Harvard recently developed a wearable device for visually impaired people to navigate more easily.

By launching their startup called Foresight, students managed to design a vest-like wearable. They used advanced levels of computer vision technology and soft robotics that connect to the user’s smartphone camera, which is placed below their neck on the vest-like wearable. The device is a keyboard and display for braille that interfaces through Bluetooth with smart devices. It helps visually impaired people access information like nothing else would.

It’s created by PCT, a company that has been researching and developing braille technology for years. Back in 2008, the company created its first low-resolution prototype of the device.
