Several types of over-the-counter eye drops, including those packaged specifically under the Walmart, Walgreens and CVS brands have been recalled due to concerns that they may not be sterile.

Sterility is nothing to mess around with where your eyes are concerned. As Altaire Pharmaceuticals, which issued the recall, says in its notice, “Administration of a non-sterile product intended to be sterile may result in serious and potentially life-threatening infections or death.”

Dozens of different types of over-the-counter eyedrops, as well as several types of prescription ophthalmic ointments, were affected. It’s best to check any eye drops or ointments you have against the full recall lists for Walmart, Walgreens and CVS, as well as any prescription ointments under the brand name Perrigo.

The recall notices say that customers with questions regarding this recall can contact Altaire Pharmaceuticals, Inc., by calling 1-800-258-2471 or emailing otcdruggist@aol.com Monday thru Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET.
