For more than a hundred years, blind and visually impaired people in Maryland have been participating in employment and training opportunities at Blind Industries and Services of Maryland.

At the organization’s Halethorpe facility, participants take free classes in Braille, cane travel, independent living skills and computer technology. Instructors who are blind teach real-world skills like cooking, home organization and navigating the world without the use of sight.

On the large production floor, blind and visually impaired associates manufacture cleaning supplies and paper goods for Maryland state agencies. They cut and sew military uniforms for the federal government and produce custom-labeled bottled water.

“Blind Industries and Services of Maryland’s purpose is to positively change people’s attitudes about blindness,” said BISM President Frederick J. Puente. “We provide blind and low vision people of all ages with the skills and confidence to succeed in all aspects of their lives.”
