Keeping your loved ones informed about your whereabouts has never been easier, thanks to the new ‘Check In’ feature introduced in iOS 17. Whether you’re traveling or just want to provide a safety update, this feature allows you to share your expected arrival time and location seamlessly. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use the ‘Check In’ feature on your iOS 17 device.
1. Update Your Devices:
Ensure both you and the recipient have updated to iOS 17 on your iPhone (or iPadOS 17 on your iPad). Mac users should be running MacOS Sonoma or later.
2. Enable Location Sharing:
Navigate to Settings, select Privacy & Security, tap Location Services, choose System Services, and turn on Share My Location.
3. Choose Data to Share:
In Settings > Messages > Check In, select the data you want to share – either ‘Limited’ or ‘Full’ details.
4. Select the Recipient:
Open the Messages app, choose a trusted contact, select the + icon, and look for the ‘Check In’ app. If eligible, select ‘Check In’ and edit settings as needed.
5. Set Expected Arrival:
Choose ‘When I arrive’ or ‘After a timer.’ For the former, set the time you’ll reach the destination; for the latter, swipe to set a timer.
6. Choose Transportation Mode:
Select your mode of transportation – Driving, Transit, or Walking. Add time if needed.
7. Send the Text:
Select the blue arrow to send the Check In text to the recipient.
8. The Other Person Is Alerted:
The recipient gets a notification, selects OK, and can allow critical alerts. They’ll see your ETA and receive a notification upon your arrival.
9. Modify the Time:
If needed, add time by selecting the Details button in the message and selecting additional minutes.
10. Cancel the Check In:
To cancel, select Details, then Cancel Check In. Confirm your action.
11. Receive the Notification:
Allow the timer to end or select the End button.
12. An Alert Is Sent if You Fail to Check In:
If you forget to end the timer, the recipient gets a critical notification with options to call you or check your location.
