In IOS 10, a new and potentially useful feature known as emergency bypass breaks through do not disturb, meaning that someone can contact you even if it is turned on. This means that a contact no longer has to be in the favourites list to break through the do not disturb filter. Note that this has to be enabled separately for calls and texts.
