The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and The Free Library of Philadelphia are now offering the “BARD” program, which stands for “Braille and audio reading download.”
Through the BARD program People can rent digital devices that create braille text on a tablet, or play audio books at local libraries. Librarians with the Schlow Centre Region Library in State College say it’s important that everyone is able to read.
“What this digital device does, is it has a line of text in braille, based on the digital file of the book that they’re reading and you run your fingers across that line of braille and read that line, and then the dots of the braille line of text change to be come the next line,” Brady Clemens, District Consultant Librarian for Schlow Centre Region Library said.
The devices are also useful for visually impaired people or children learning to read.
