A 48-eight-year-old Sri Lankan national who was suffering from acute astigmatism has restored his normal vision, thanks to a special implant which was imported from the US.

The implant was conducted during a special operation at the NMC hospital in Dubai.

The patient has got rid of his glasses, cataract and astigmatism all at one go and didn’t have to go for a multi-level, conventional eye surgery.

According to Dr Amit Jain, Specialist Ophthalmologist, NMC Hospital, DIP said that the patient had complained of a blurry and foggy vision. He had difficulty in reading small print despite wearing glasses and had a cataract problem.

“Astigmatism is an imperfection in the curvature of the cornea – cornea is the clear and round dome covering the eye’s iris and pupil — or in the shape of the eye’s lens. Normally, the cornea and lens are smooth and curved equally in all directions, helping to focus light rays sharply at the back of our eye forming a clear image.

However, if the cornea or lens isn’t smooth and evenly curved, light rays don’t form a recognizable image.

“It is almost like looking into a fun house mirror in which you appear too tall, too wide or too thin. When the cornea has an irregular shape, it is called corneal astigmatism. When the shape of the lens is distorted, you have lenticular astigmatism. As a result of either type of astigmatism, the vision for both near and far objects appears blurry or distorted.”

Dr Amit further added, “Since the patient was 48 years old, LASIK was not indicated as LASIK is mostly indicated in the age group of 20- 40 years. Furthermore LASIK doesn’t give full recovery to the near vision.”

“The patient was operated for cataract and administered a special implant from US. It was used for the first time in Dubai called Pan Optix. The implant is a trifocal lens offering a full range of vision – near, intermediate and distant, explains Dr Amit.

The patient was happy to be rid of his glasses, cataract and astigmatism all at one go. He was also chuffed about the fact that he didn’t have to go for a multi-level conventional surgery. He said, “The UAE has embraced medical technology like no other nation. I am happy to have come to NMC DIP and got myself treated completely and that too in a single sitting.”

Prasanth Manghat, CEO and Executive Director of NMC Healthcare, commented, “Nothing compares with the joy of restoring someone’s normal vision. It gives us tremendous satisfaction that our advanced eye-surgery program continues to serve communities. Our world is a beautiful planet and it shall be our endeavor to make it a happy and healthy place for everyone to cherish. Our endeavor shall always be to offer a complete spectrum of services in the interest of continuum of care.”

Post-operation the patient’s vision was good and he is now completely free of lenses.
