The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has cracked down on clinics that are making claims that certain stem cell therapies can treat a number of serious diseases such as macular degeneration, Parkinson’s disease, autism, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, and heart attacks.
Laser-Base Imaging Device Screens for Early Signs of Blindness
An Auckland bioengineer has made research into screening for eye diseases his life’s obsession in honor of his father who went blind as a boy.
Blue Light from Smartphones and Tablets Accelerating Blindness, According to Study
Researchers from The University of Toledo studied the impact of blue light — which comes from the sun as well as digital devices — on our eyes.
Scientists Discover Blindness Gene
Our genome is made up of 20,000 genes, all of which may cause disease. At present, 4,141 genes have been identified as being responsible for genetic abnormalities, leaving around 16,000 genes with unknown implication in disease. Researchers from the University of Geneva (UNIGE), Switzerland, working in collaboration with scientists from Pakistan and the USA — have investigated a recessive genetic disorder that destroys the eyes from developing and results in childhood blindness. After analyzing the genomes of each member of a consanguineous family with affected children, the geneticists pinpointed pathogenic mutations in a new gene, MARK3, as being the cause. They subsequently confirmed their findings — published in the journal Human Molecular Genetics — by modifying the homologous gene in drosophila flies, which resulted in abnormal eye development and blindness. The identification of the MARK3 related disease will help to understand the mechanism of the disease, provide diagnostic services, and initiate efforts for a personalized treatment.
Can Eye-Bonds Help Combat Blindness?
As reported by News Talk Florida, U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis, R-Fla., joined U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, and U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop, D-Ga., in pushing a bill to fund treatments to cure blindness.
Bookshare’s 390,000 Books Are Now Available for People with Blindness in India

Doctors Say Laser Pointer Burned a Hole in a 9-Year-Old Boy’s Eye
A 9-year-old boy visited an ophthalmology clinic in Larissa, Greece, complaining of vision problems in his left eye, the case study published in the New England Journal of Medicine says. Despite having 20/20 vision in his right eye, doctors found that his left eyesight was around 20/100 — a discrepancy explained by a hole on his left macula, a part of the retina that “provides sharp, central vision,” according to the National Eye Institute.
Worlds First 3-D Printed Human Corneas Could One Day Treat Blindness
Scientists have 3D printed corneas for the first time in new research, offering hope to millions of people around the world whose eyesight is affected by damage to the delicate tissue. The cornea is a clear sheath that sits over the iris and the pupil, helping to direct light rays onto the retina. If the cornea becomes damaged, the image sent to the brain can become blurry. Currently, patients with damaged corneas can undergo transplants in serious cases, but this necessitates a donor—of which there is a significant shortage.
HoloLens Can Now Guide Blind Users Inside Buildings
Microsoft’s HoloLens has an impressive ability to quickly sense its surroundings, but a group of scientists found it’s really good at helping blind people find their way through buildings and offering a better sense of where objects are around them.
