Eyedaptic introduces Eye3 AR glasses for low vision users

Eyedaptic has introduced Eye3, a new-and-improved version of its augmented reality eye wear.

Who are these glasses designed for?

The Eye3 is designed for patients with age-related macular degeneration and low vision.

How does the Eye3 work?

The Eye3 comprises a high-resolution camera on lightweight eye wear that is operated via Bluetooth from a cell phone, Eyedaptic sales manager, Brian Schleiger, said.

A battery pack is attached to the side of the eye wear. The battery lasts 1 hour and can be recharged in a charging pod while the spare battery is in use.

How does it compare to The earlier version?

The earlier version, the Eye2, was useful for patients with 20/50 to 20/250 vision. The Eye3 is effective for patients with more severe conditions and up to 20/800 vision. read more

Australian researchers turn a pair of regular glasses into night-vision devices

Researchers from the Australian National University have developed technology that allows people to see clearly in the dark revolutionizing night vision. The researchers used a first-of-it’s-kind thin film that is ultra-compact and could eventually work on standard glasses.

The prototype technology uses nanoscale crystals and has the potential to be used in the defence industry as well as making it safer to drive and walk at night. The tech is thin and lightweight, potentially reducing chronic neck injuries resulting from carrying bulky night-vision devices in use today. read more

Sony Partners with GiveVision to Create Compact Glasses for Visually Impaired Users

For people with low vision, simply being able to see the real world is a huge step forward — and one U.K. GiveVision will address with new AR-like glasses that are more comfortable and socially acceptable than prior options.

Having previously released a VR goggles-style wearable called SightPlus, GiveVision has designed SightPlus 2 (also called SightPlus Generation 2) to resemble early AR glasses — smaller, lighter in weight, and akin to boxy sunglasses. They use what the company describes as a combination of VR and AR to simulate human vision with an over 100-degree field of view “in near real time.” The company is working with Sony to develop and manufacture the lightweight wearable, going so far as to relocate its design office to a Sony UK facility in South Wales. read more

Nearly one in 30 Americans over the age of 40 experience low vision — significant visual impairment that can’t be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, medication or surgery.

an inherited degenerative eye disease that results in poor vision, Keck School of Medicine of USC researchers found in a new study of patients with retinitis pigmentosa, that adapted augmented reality (AR) glasses can improve patients’ mobility by 50% and grasp performance by 70%.

“Current wearable low vision technologies using virtual reality are limited and can be difficult to use or require patients to undergo extensive training,” said Mark Humayun, MD, PhD, director of the USC Dr. Allen and Charlotte Ginsburg Institute for Biomedical Therapeutics, co-director of the USC Roski Eye Institute and University Professor of Ophthalmology at the Keck School. read more
