BBeep is a Suitcase That Helps Visually Impaired People Navigate Airport Terminals

The BBeep is a suitcase and more developed in part by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University that helps visually impaired people navigate airport terminals.

“Despite recent efforts to improve accessibility, airport terminals remain challenging for people with visual impairments to navigate independently,” Chieko Asakawa, the IBM Distinguished Service Professor at CMU’s Robotics Institute, said in a news release.

“Airport and airline personnel are available to help them get to departure gates, but they usually can’t explore and use the terminal amenities as sighted people can,” Asakawa said. read more

Blind Japanese Inventor to be Inducted into the U.S. National Inventors Hall of Fame

Chieko Asakawa, an Osaka-born computer scientist, is among 19 innovators who will be inducted into the U.S. National Inventors Hall of Fame.

Blind since the age of 14, Asakawa has dedicated the past three decades to researching and developing new technologies to help transform the lives of the visually impaired.

Asakawa’s inventions have impacted millions worldwide, and now one of them will receive one of the ultimate in industry accolades. The Osaka-born computer scientist, who lives in the United States, is among 19 innovators who will be inducted into the U.S. National Inventors Hall of Fame in Washington in May. read more

Japanese Doctor Develops New Technology for the Blind

Chieko Asakawa, a Japanese doctor and inventor, is developing a new technology that will aid visually impaired individuals. Her passion for advancing technology for the visually impaired started when Asakawa had a swimming pool accident when she was 14 which caused her blindness. She is now working with other companies to improve the area of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help people live a normal life.
