How To Set Up Google Assistant on Sonos Speakers

SETting UP GOOGLE ASSISTANT ON THE SONOS ONE OR SONOS BEAM.

Each of Sonos’ smart speakers can have its own voice assistant, so if you want, you can configure one to use Alexa and another to use Google Assistant. Under this scenario, your Sonos system stays in sync and both voice assistants remain aware of what’s playing, no matter which you requested it from.

To Use Google Assistant, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Sonos app on your mobile device.
  2. Select the “More” tab at the bottom right and select “Voice Services.”
  3. Choose Google Assistant. From here, you’ll be presented with a list of compatible speakers, where you can select which ones you want to run Google Assistant instead of Alexa.
  4. After choosing the speaker(s), you’ll be switched to the Google Assistant app (if you’re using iOS, this must first be installed to successfully go through this process).
  5. Sign in with your Sonos account information to link Assistant to your existing Sonos setup.
  6. Google will then run through several steps, which include detecting your Sonos speaker, requesting permission to access and control it, asking you what room it’s placed in, and then adding the music services you use.
  7. If you’re already a Google Assistant user, you’ve probably already set it to work with Spotify, Pandora, or Google Play Music / YouTube Music. Just make sure that those same services are added to your Sonos account through the Sonos app, as well.
  8. You will need to go through the Google part of this setup for each Sonos One or Beam speaker that you are using the Assistant.
  9. Once you are done, you can just say “OK Google” or “Hey Google” to start trying out voice commands or music requests.

How to configure Google Assistant to control OLDER SONOS SPEAKERS:

  1. Open the Sonos app on your mobile device.
  2. Select the “More” tab at the bottom right and select “Voice Services.”
  3. Choose Google Assistant.
  4. This time there’s no menu for choosing speakers. You just sign in with your Sonos account credentials inside the Google Assistant app.
  5. Link all your music services to Google Assistant if you haven’t already and choose which one you prefer to be the default source for song requests.

How To Update Your Sonos Speakers for AirPlay 2 and Siri

Sonos has launched AirPlay 2 support via a software update that brings HomeKit and Siri functionality. The update brings AirPlay 2 to Sonos’ newest speakers. The list includes Sonos Beam, Sonos Playbase, Sonos One, and the second-generation Sonos Play:5.

How to update Sonos speakers for AirPlay 2

  1. Open Sonos and select More in the bottom right corner
  2. Select Update which will take you to the App Store to update the app, unless your device has already installed version 9.0
  3. Open Sonos again, the app should prompt to Check for Updates.
  4. Select Update to apply the new software to your speaker
    If you hit any trouble with installing the update to your speakers, just tap Try Again.
  5. Now you should get the AirPlay splash screen.

You can now play music/media over your Sonos speakers via AirPlay.

Look for the AirPlay icon, or in Apple Music, select the audio source icon . You’ll now have your Sonos speaker show up in the source list. Once you’ve started playing music via AirPlay, you’ll see a Started from AirPlay in the Sonos app. At this point you can group other non-AirPlay 2 Sonos speakers with the supported one. read more

Sonos Now Supports AirPlay 2 for Newer Speakers

AirPlay 2 has arrived on Sonos. Now any app on your iOS devices can be streamed directly to Sonos speakers including Sonos Beam, Sonos One, Playbase and the second generation Play:5. The roll out comes a week ahead of the new Beam living room smart speaker, which ships with AirPlay 2 support.

AirPlay 2 is designed to allow iOS users to select the speakers they want to play music through, thanks to its new multi-room audio support.

Siri is also more closely integrated into AirPlay 2 on an iPhone, so you can now ask Apple’s digital assistant to play music on specific speakers. read more

Sonos Launches Beam Soundbar

Sonos has announced Beam, a soundbar incorporating a HDMI ARC for the very first time, in addition to Siri voice control and AirPlay 2.

Designed to support multi-room audio around the home, Sonos is pitching its much-hyped offering as a “3-in-1” soundbar combining voice control, support for not one but all streaming services, and a compact size.

It’s reportedly 60% smaller than Sonos’ latest Playbar speaker, and 20% shorter too. Despite its small form factor, it incorporates four, custom-built “full-range” woofers, three passive radiators and a single tweeter. read more
