A new device coming to Bradley university’s campus will allow students to open doors with the literal push of a button.

That may seem like that was always possible in the 32 years since the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act, but this new device hopes to put more control in the hands of the disabled person.

How does it work?

Unlike the button that can be seen on walls or posts near doors, the Push device can we worn on a keychain or on the wrist and works remotely as someone approaches the door. The PUSH™ device is a small machine which allows those with disabilities to open doors without needing to use the traditional method.

How is the system integrated to existing doors?

They take the metal plate off the door and attach one of the systems to their already existing motors. It takes about 5-10 minutes to install it into the door and then automatically whenever you press this button, it send a radio frequency to that door.

We Hear You designed the product, starting on Bradley’s campus. With its roots in Peoria, it was one of the reasons Bradley’s President Stephen Standifird said he was eager to hop on to the technology.

“I think it’s a great technology, a really wonderful way to make a campus more accessible,” Standifird said. “I’ve already started reaching out to college and other schools to encourage them to look into the technology as well.”

Is the remote available to everyone?

Bradley began installation on the project in July. When students come back in August, they’ll hand out the remotes to students who need them. As of right now, the remote can’t be purchased individually.

What is the goal for the remote?

We Hear You wants to expand beyond Bradley. They say the goal is to make the whole city as accessible as possible, starting with the little Push device. They say some businesses and institutions have pending deals on the product and are currently testing out prototypes.
