Security Alert: Apple’s AirDrop has a data leakage vulnerability

Apple’s AirDrop can be an incredibly useful utility, but it is possible that you could be sending more than you bargained for, as researchers have found that an attacker could glean the phone number and email of AirDrop users.

the researchers reported this privacy issue in 2019, but a reported 1.5 billion users are still vulnerable as Apple has seemingly done nothing. Earlier this week, researchers at the Technical University of Darmstadt published a blog outlining their findings about AirDrop. To preface, AirDrop allows users to share files with address book contacts. To verify that someone is in an address book, AirDrop uses a “mutual authentication mechanism” to compare a user’s phone number and email with entries in the other user’s address book. read more

How to lock Portrait Orientation on your iPhone or iPad

On an iPhone, when you tilt your device on its side, the screen follows and rotates to landscape orientation. Turning on portrait orientation locks the screen so that no matter which way your iPhone is turned, the screen will stay in place. Instead of your iPhone screen flipping between portrait and landscape view, you can use portrait orientation lock.

You can lock the screen orientation on your iPhone or later model of iPad quickly and easily in Control Center. First, you’re going to need to make sure you’ve updated your iPhone or iPad to iOS or iPadOS 13, at minimum. For the former, that means you’ll need at least an iPhone SE or iPad Air 2. To update your device to the most modern version of iOS you can get, select Settings app, select General, and select Software Update.

Once you have iOS / iPadOS 13 running, enabling your device’s dark mode is similarly simple. Select Settings > Display & Brightness, and then pick Light or Dark.

You can also use the “Automatic” setting to shift your device from its Light theme to its Dark theme at sunrise or sunset (or on whatever custom schedule you prefer). And if you find that some of your favorite apps don’t have a dark mode they can use, you can force that, too. read more

Scotiabank has released a new app for iPhone and iPad users, which it describes as “redesigned for real life.”

The new app, version 20.0.0, features a new look and logo, to go with fast money transfers, new shortcuts for easy navigation and quick answers to common questions. The bank first notified customers a redesign was coming back on May 10, 2019.
